My food was delivered to the table at just the right temperature. The prime rib I ordered was very good cooked rare, as I had requested. The mashed potato was the real deal, and the vegetables were garden fresh. I found the music uplifting and the lake view soothing. My experience, at the Hofbrau was quite relaxing. The portions were generous. After coffee, I decided to bring the black forest cake, I had ordered for desert, home with me. The friend, who was with me ordered potato pancakes. She said they were the "Best" she had ever eaten. She also ordered Sauerbraten, which she said was delicious! Desert was included in these "Specials" that we ordered. Given the generous portions, the clean, rustic atmosphere, and the quality of the food, it was well worth the drive! Life is good.
A tragedy, really no joking.
I think that in order to charge someone $25 for an entree, you have to cook the food to order. Apparently, Mr. Scholtz disagrees, as our salmon was cooked very well, however that cooking took place several hours (or days?) before we arrived. The salmon was delivered to our table, luke warm, 45 seconds after we ordered it. Nuke it a little longer please, for $25 a plate? thanks so much....
German potato salad? An insult to Germans. Potato pancakes, cooked another day, perhaps frozen, certainly reheated, not cooked to order. On my way out, Mr. Scholtz asked me how it was and I would have asked for my money back but I think that's impolite.
Incredibly Disappointing. Being locals, we really want this place to succeed. Unfortunately, they seem determined to run the business into the ground. You walk in the door and see numerous beer taps offering an excellent selection of draft beers, but this is a ploy. None of the taps are functional. You would think that a German restaurant would know the difference between a bratwurst and a knockwurst. After asking if they had bratwurst, I ordered one but I got a knockwurst that looked liked it sat on a grill at a convenience store for a week or two. It was so tough and knarly that I almost asked for a steak knife to cut it. I guess if we want good German food we’ll keep on going to the Mountain Brauhaus in Round Top even though it’s a forty mile drive each way and Zwicklbauer’s is just a few miles from our house.
Worst Food Ever!.
I am a stickler for German food, coming from a family who's roots are deep in the Black Forest, I was HIGHLY annoyed at the lack of selection in food.
These guys are a joke. Not even a funny one. Almost as funny as WW2, which isn't funny either.
I figured I'd drank myself half-drunk to at least get the taste of crap out of my mouth, but their beer selection was out of this world, as in, it didn't exist..
I hope someone closes these guys out. I hope the Paki's buy this place out and shut it down. turn it into a 7-11 or something worth while.
Fantastic Ambience.
We were married at the outdoor gazebo many years back and had a very memorable wedding day - because of this the restaurant has always had a special place in our hearts. Unfortunately, the restaurant is under "new" management since we were married there. We surely miss Reinhold and his lovely daughter Mandy - they made you feel like family and truly knew how to run a bar and restaurant! During the time of the "new" owners there have been many months of being shut down for renovations which have had no changes (thankfully) to the decor - inside or out. The current owners are trying their best to run this previously successful business into the ground. The prices are high and any normally included side dishes (sauerkraut, potato pancakes, red cabbage, etc) are extra. Normally, I wouldn't mind if the food were great. However, the food is mediocre at best. The waitstaff, though friendly, is not knowledgeable about the food and as stated in the subject line - there are no beers on tap, let alone German ones. This restaurant, under the able hand of Reinhold Scholtz, was a great place to retreat to for a wonderful dinner and great camaraderie. Unfortunately, paying $30-$40 per person is unacceptable at a restaurant that bills itself as German with piped in Louie Armstrong music...
Like German food, music and atmosphere (at an affordable price)? Go to Germania Hall in North Troy on Friday nights. It's a bit of a hike for us, as we live right by Zwick's, but the drive is worth it for the great service and tasty food - not to mention the super value!
Great Prime Rib. Food was terrific and scenic view is wonderful. big variey of food to order.
awful. took a drive out to this place a while back, and if this were not the only restaurant in town I doubt they'd be doing much business. Food wasn't gross or anything but totally unauthentic. Not even close. Don't go here expecting anything close to real German cuisine
New management, great food and ambience. A nice family run restaurant - former managers of Ralph's. Great food and atmosphere at a reasonable price. Worth the trip.
