Editorial Review for Smith's Tavern – by Carol M. Kaelin
In Short
City folk craving small-town atmosphere find it here. Formica paneling and model trains characterize this kid-friendly tavern. This spot serves upstate pizza at its best. Feast on the prizewinning Villager, Mexican or white pizzas, or fabricate your own with anything from olives and broccoli to pepperoni and sausage. No Alfredo or Parmesan pastas here, but sandwiches like a grilled Reuben, soups and salads fill the bill for the non-pie crowd.

Smith's is what it is. My usual trip is with kids - for whom there's no better a place. But I've seen Goths and bikers and the fashionable set there, too; they fit in. I see no reason for Smith's to try 'exoctic' toppings on their pizza, but they do, and some swear by the odder ones and the chance to try something different. To my way of thinking it's catering to the type of snots who wrote earlier reviews, and who needs them. V'ville ain't Naples, the crust's kinship to bread is perceptible and the sauce is more hearty than exotic, so it's not going to be at the top of some lists - but it will be at the top of others, and anyone who had a downright unhappy experience there probably generally has unhappy experiences.
Pros: parking, friendly staff, good food
Cons: no privacy, sometimes noisy

I grew up there, my father and my uncles got there education there. I now live in NC. Believe me, nothing down here compares. It's the best. Others in the area are real good, but not as good. I'll be home soon after the new year, just to go there and get the best pizza in the capital region. Miis the trains
Pros: Same people, unique, the pizza
Cons: Same people, parking, I'm not there
