Millions of artifacts encompass all that is New York from Iroquois culture to a World Trade Center Memorial..
The Scene
The New York State Museum is not only an important research center, it's also a great place to visit. And not just for kids. While there's a lot here that appeals to the young set, any adult interested in New York's history, industry, geology, flora or fauna will find the museum entertaining and educational.
The Collection
The museum is divided into three sections: the New York Metropolis, the Adirondack Wilderness and the Native Peoples of New York. The Native Peoples section includes the Mohawk Iroquois Longhouse, one of the Museum's perennial favorites. The gift shop sells many books, maps and novelties relating to New York's natural history. The second-floor cafe overlooks one of the museum's prizes, a full mastodon skeleton unearthed in 1866 at Harmony Mills.
Good Local Museum. Very good museum, but expect more for a museum in the capitol of our state. NYC museums a lot better. Special exhibits are usually exvellent.
NY History At Its Best. The New York State Museum in Albany has so much to offer. The children's section will keep your kids happy for hours. The wildlife and Native American Indian displays are interesting and realistic. The New York City display takes you right there, without the hassle of the city streets. Also, they run inexpensive and excellent special exhibits every year that are downright wonderful. You can go every year and learn something new.
