Tips for Parting Glass

Go while you still can. Word has it that this Saratoga institution sold out to a developer and will be leveled to put up a hotel. Too bad, since it's probably the best Irish bar in the Capital District. The sprawling mass is like three bars in one -- a neighborhood bar/eatery in front, a music venue in the middle, and a sports bar in the spacious rear room, which features another bar, lots of dartboards, televisions and other games. If this place goes, Saratoga will lose one of its true originals and will move yet another step closer to the characterless yuppiedom that it has been becoming since the late 1990s.

A bit of the Clover in Saratoga. OK, maybe even stating "Irish Pub" can be redundant. Although I am not of this persuasion this is a great bar. Perhaps the best in Saratoga Springs. Many of the other places here are either dives catering to 23 year old drunks, or upscale joints postering as Manhattan bistros. This is a real place. Its fun, the food is great, the beer is great and both the staff and the customers are enjoyable. Depending on what time of year you visit the experience will be very different. In the summer expect a lot of track people hanging here after the races. Bigger than it looks, so make sure to explore the entire place!

While many of Saratoga Springs attractions dry up during the colder months when the horses aren't are town, you can count on the Parting Glass to deliver the goods year-round, weather be damned, bego. The Scene:

A spectacular monster of a club, the vast Parting Glass is known for its music, its beer, its whiskey, and its cuisine, all of which tend to be thoroughly infused with strong Irish, Gaelic, Celtic, Scotch or English flavors. The nicest thing about this very nice venue is that its size and layout give you the opportunity to tap (pun only marginally intended) into any one of the house's strong suits without having to be exposed to the other ones, unless you want to be. So you can stop by for a quiet dinner without having to yell and clap for (or with) the evening's performers, or you can do both, and have some beer and scotch to boot. Your call, entirely.

Must Have Drinks:
Dewar's on the rocks; John Courage.

A Must Stop. My must stop whenever I'm in town, race season or out.

Friendly spot when you're a solo diner on business.

Beer choice easy, Guiness. Food choice is the tough part. Great Italian food but I'm always drawn to that great O'Reilly's sandwich.

Straight From Ireland. If you want some good old Irish fun, this is the place to be. Great Irish beers among others, if that isn't your taste. There are games to be played, Irish bands to listen to, and steaming hot delicious food to eat. Don't miss this opportunity when your in Saratoga, you're Irish eyes won't be smiling.

Every kind of beer available. Great atmosphere. Hundreds of different beers available. Great entertainment including some local and non-local Irish bands such as "Hair Of the Dog" play here frequently.
