LOCO LOCO
by shineon8
El Loco Cafe starting meal price around $9.
For the last 20 years I have given them a chance from time to time. They are one of the most expensive Mexican restaurant's in the Capital Region and they STILL don't give their guests chips.
So lets say you choose to pay for one basket of $1 chips, Salsa starts at $2.75 w/chips, they offer you a selection of 3 sauces (one called loco). El Loco STILL has those ridiculously tiny paper cups. So you can shove your chip into a dixi cup of sauce if you like!! ..
My bean Quesadilla was around $10. One flower tortilla, black beans, cheese, some lettuce with rice on the side. The same dish in San Diego would have been $4.50. My friend ordered an ice tea, and when asked if he would like another, the waitress added, "b/c that's the only drink with free refills."
I have always loved El Loco's atmosphere and friendly waitstaff, but I am officially done. Just b/c you have always done things a certain way doesn't make it good.
El Loco is the best Mexican food I have ever had anywhere.

Forget Garcias !!! They don't even touch the fajitas here. They make their own salsa and I have never had anything like it anywhere because they make it with chipotle hot sauce. Their house dressing should be bottled and sold it's that good. The only thing I didn't care for is their black fried beans over rice they serve as a side dish. I always ask for them to replace it with extra lettuce so I can have more of their house salad dressing. They also carry vegetarian dishes too. For example chilli and a steamed vegetable burrito. Oh and let not forget they make the strongest margaritas. Nothing water down here.
- Pros: food
- Cons: small place
disappointing

i have tried and tried to like el loco but have been disappointed every time. the chicken fajita meat is over marinated and they charge you for chips and salsa (nothing free here)!! i must admit that the margaritas are good and there is a really cute deck in the back . If I am only interested in drinking and hanging out on a warm summer day it is lovely...but when looking for good mexican food I choose El Mariachi EVERY time!
- Pros: nice small deck, tasty margaritas
- Cons: FOOD, cost
Feast on mouthwatering though not-exactly-authentic Mexican fare in this cozy, neighborhood joint just off Washington Park.

In Short
Tile floors and low lighting add warmth to the small, narrow room. Start with tortilla chips and salsa from the help-yourself salsa bar. The burrito espinaca wraps fresh spinach, sliced mushrooms, artichoke hearts and shallots in a flour tortilla before heaping it with melted cheeses. Salads are served in edible tortilla bowls, as are sides of rice, beans and guacamole. Satiate your sweet tooth with the bananachanga: banana chunks rolled in a flour tortilla and deep-fried to a golden brown.

El Loco is the best Mexican food I have had in Albany. There have been many dissappointments but El Loco was closest to the good stuff I grew up with in Texas. Its a little pricey but that's always the case with Mexican food anywhere in New York state. The chimichangas are a TexMex staple and El Loco's got 'em, along with the bananachanga twist for dessert. The lighting is dim and romantic for dates but the tables are also kinda close together, if you're going for the romantic feel.
- Pros: food quality, menu ingenuity, ambiance
- Cons: , tight seating , parking is spotty
